What BREED of DOG is your Favourite Kind?

“POODLE ADDITION”

Poodle’s are a very popular but a formal breed of dog which comes in three different varieties; Standard Poodle, Miniature Poodle and Toy Poodle. Unfortunately, their origins are still being discussed as disputes stating that they have either derived from Germany as a type of water dog or from the French Barbet. The poodles have been present in society for over many centuries in Europe before making their way to Britain, North America, East Asia and even Australia. The first documentation of Poodles were drawings by a German artist “Albrecht Dürer” which establishing their popularity in the 15th-16th centuries.

They are highly active, elegant, well proportioned, intelligent and from my experience some can be needy/very vocal (either from lack of training or can be caused by separation anxiety from leaving their owners side). Poodles do really require both physical and mental stimulation and they have been considered having some behaviour faults too (Snappy/vicious). They are very loyal to their master/family, but some can become very protective when danger is looming. Poodles are very trainable, and they happen to excel at obedience training, which also may include sports like; dog agility, fly ball, dog surfing, disc and dock diving.

Unlike most dogs (having a double coat), they have single-layer coat with no under coat which is made up of dense curly fur and they tend to have minimal shedding. Poodles can also be classified as hypoallergenic as when they shed the hair it doesn’t fall off but become entangled on the dog instead which then regular grooming is required to keep their coat in good condition.

Some health issues include; Addison’s Disease (Primary Adrenal Insufficiency and Hypercortisolism), Gastric Dilation Volvulus (Twisting of the stomach), Thyroid issues (Hyperthyroidism and Hypothyroidism), Tracheal collapse, Epilepsy, Sebaceous Adenitis (Inflammation of a gland- example lymph node), Juvenile renal disease, Hip Dysplasia and even more susceptible to cancers. The most common minor health issues would be the constant ear infections due to their no-shedding coat as it grows in the ear canal trapping wax and dirt.
