This can be an exciting journey for you and your family when bringing home new puppy. I am going to discuss some tips, tricks and what you will need for the start of this wonderful next step.

Some questions to ask yourself before you go pick up and bring your little fur friend home.

Have I done my research on what type of breed that will

suit me and or family?

Am I going to adopt from a rescue group/shelter or

purchase one from a Puppy store?

Do I have everything I need for the new family member?

Is my home puppy proof/safe?

What will I call my new Puppy?

If adopting from a rescue/shelter they may have been already given a name. They have arrived in a new environment, away from their mother or their other little friends. I will be brutally honest; it will be tough the first couple of nights. You need to work out where you want them to sleep and some people choose to crate train, put them in a confined space (bathroom) or sleeping in your bed. They may whimper and break our hearts but try to avoid bringing them into our bed (only if you don’t want them in your bed in the future). You can give them some snuggly toys to keep them company and you can even give them a shirt that smells like you too. Just like newborn human babies they also need a regular routine to be established.

Next you will need to take your puppy to a Veterinary professional for the following; vaccinations, preventives (worming and fleas), general advice or any questions you want to ask. Then you will have quick chat about Puppy school if you are wanting to attend. (I will go into length in another post about Puppy School down the track). Puppy school is a great tool to help you and your puppy bond while having a professional right beside you taking it step by step.

If you are planning to leave your puppy alone for long periods of time be sure to allow adequate time for them to initially settle into the home first. Start off gradually, when your home, go leave the puppy alone for short bursts of time. By doing this you can monitor them for any separation anxiety.

Lastly, enjoy the time spent with these little ones as they grow up so quickly. I have also attached a quick little checklist which I have found useful for getting a new fur baby. Checklist
